MUSIC – “I sometimes had suicidal thoughts and I’m not proud of it”. Three days after Stromae’s intervention on TF1’s 8 p.m. newscast and the media resonance it triggered, the title clip Hell by the Belgian artist has just been posted on his Youtube channel on Wednesday 12 January.
In a sober staging, Stromae utters the powerful lyrics of this text, taken from his upcoming album Multitude. “I’m not the only one to be alone, it’s already that less in the head”, he sings, all dressed in white, ponytail high on his head. But when the chorus accelerates, the artist is suddenly seized with spasms. Watch the clip below:
Three days earlier, Sunday January 9, Stromae had created a surprise with a perfectly controlled media stunt. While answering questions from Anne-Claire Coudray on the set of TF1’s 20h JT, the 36-year-old interpreter unveiled the text of this song for the first time. Hell, without taking your eyes off the camera.
Seen by some 7 million viewers in front of their stations the same evening, the sequence now reaches 5.3 million views on the channel’s Twitter account and nearly 4 million on the artist’s YouTube channel. A good bet that the clip unveiled this Wednesday, January 12 should also record records.
If the fans were won over and Anne-Claire Coudray confided to having lived with him “the most beautiful moment of [sa] career as an interviewer ”, Stromae’s performance also drew criticism. In a post, Release points to a “marketing operation openly instrumentalizing the program” while L’Obs deplores the end of the “distinction between the space of information, subjected to this tenacious old thing which one calls the journalistic deontology, and the space of the clip”.
In addition to the form, it is also the substance of this text that makes people react. After Stromae bluntly confessed his “suicidal thoughts,” World Health Organization (WHO) director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised his courage. “Thank you Stromae for bringing up the difficult subject of suicide on your last album. It is so important to ask for help if you are having difficulty and to support those who need help, ”he tweeted.
Multitude, Stromae’s new album, will be released on March 4th.
