Reuben McNulty, from just two weeks old, he was sitting in an armchair with his mother, Amy Litchfield, —Who had fallen asleep— when was attacked by the dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, called Dotty.
His father, Daniel McNulty, He dialed the emergency number when he discovered the bloody scene at his apartment in Yaxley, Cambridgeshire. He had gone out to smoke when the attack occurred, local media reported.
The baby was taken to the hospital in the early morning of November 18, 2018, but died of a serious head injury on December 13, at the age of five weeks.
Simon Newbury, a veterinary forensic expert, said the The dog reportedly bit the baby up to 23 times on the head while shaking him.
Newbury said at the hearing on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, “It is possible that Dottie saw Reuben as a small prey or a toy.”
Dan and Amy were arrested by police on suspicion of child neglect after the incident, but prosecutors decided not to charge them in December 2020.
Social services issued a child protection plan prior to Reuben’s birth that stated that he should never be left alone with Dottie and the other dog, also a nine-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Fizz.
Amy had owned the dogs since their birth and there were no previous reports of violence or assault by them. But nevertheless, both dogs were seized by the police and euthanized after the incident.
The hearing, which was not attended by the baby’s parents – who separated after the death of their son – served to define their responsibility for the incident after the investigations, since they determined that it had been a “short involuntary period of lack of of attention that unfortunately had horrible and tragic consequences ”.
