The tournament in Estonia is unusual. First, pre-Olympic. Secondly, passing under the sign of fear of the covid. The favorites of the dance tournament, the French Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Sizeron, did not come to Tallinn: they do not want to risk before the main start of the season – the Olympic Games in Beijing. Just before the start of the championship, due to a positive test, the Israeli national team, as well as Anastasia Polibina / Pavel Golovishnikov (Poland) and Jessica Pound / Joshua Santillan (Switzerland), withdrew due to a positive test. Swedish figure skater Nikolai Mayorov passed negative tests at home, reached Tallinn, and already at the entrance to the arena, an express test was positive. Goodbye, European Championship …
Without Mayorov, 20 athletes competed in the short program for men. The Russians “shot” brilliantly and very closely – all scored 99 points with a penny. The closest pursuer of our skaters, the former Russian Moris Kvitelashvili, is inferior after the short program by more than six points. The first is Andrei Mozalev, who jumped a cascade of a quadruple sheepskin coat – a triple sheepskin coat, a quadruple salchow and a triple axel. The same set – Evgeny Semenenko, who became the third. In second place – Mark Kondratyuk, who performed a quadruple toe loop, triple axel and a cascade of quadruple salchow – triple toe loop.
It’s interesting, by the way, what will happen if the whole trinity performs gorgeous in the free program. Who to unhook from the Olympic team? After all, the nominal leader Mikhail Kolyada did not come to Tallinn. It is hard to imagine that Kolyada himself, behind whom is his coach Alexei Mishin, will not go to Beijing. Especially after another student of the Professor, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, did not get into the national team. In general, we wish our fiurists a great performance on Friday, and the Federation officials a pleasant “torment” when choosing the Olympic troika.
By the way, if, according to the results of the free program, the entire pedestal for men will be Russian, then our skaters can set an all-time record – win 12 medals of the European Championship out of 12. At the last Euro in 2020, the Russians took 10 awards. Another went to Maurice Kvitelashvili, who was born in Moscow and still trains with Eteri Tutberidze, and the last went to Papadakis and Sizeron, who, as we know, did not come to Tallinn. In the competitions of couples and women, the probability of a completely Russian podium is almost one hundred percent. In dancing, the Russian national team in Estonia is represented by the reigning world champions Victoria Sinitsina / Nikita Katsalapov, as well as Alexandra Stepanova / Ivan Bukin and Diana Davis / Gleb Smolkin. Italians Guignard / Fabbri, Britons Fir / Gibson, Spaniards Hurtado / Khalyavin can prevent one of the last two pairs from winning medals. But here, too, the chances for three awards are very high. So we are waiting for the record.
