On January 7, the Cyprus Times published a note in which a professor at the University of Cyprus Leontios Kostrikis spoke about the discovery of 25 SARS-CoV-2 genomes of the delta variant, containing mutations characteristic of the omicron variant. Seven mutations characteristic of the omicron were found in the S-protein of the coronavirus, which gave rise to a new variant of the “deltacron”. In a message to the Cyprus Times, Kostrikis also talked about the increased detection rate of this option among patients requiring hospitalization.
