The drama of the forest fires in Greater La Plata does not give truce. This afternoon, the flames affected a large sector in Abasto on Route 36 and a few meters from the Estancia Chica property of the Gymnastics club.
Both the flames and the huge column of smoke made it difficult to see and traffic the route for several kilometers of that section. Fire crews from El Peligro, Abasto, Olmos, Melchor Romero, and the Forestry Brigade were working hard to fight the fire.
“It began at around 3 pm, and 30 hectares were already consumed. And above all it affected dozens of eucalyptus, pines and other species of trees,” an official source told EL DIA.
HEAT AND DROUGHT, AN EXPLOSIVE COMBO
In addition to what it does to the health of the neighbors, the suffocating heat wave that is hitting the region has another face: that of the grassland fires. At this time there are several complaints about igneous sources in different parts of the City.
By case, as reported, in recent days Olmos firefighters reported that “we went out up to 12 times a day” to put out flames that started in open areas.
In addition, it was reported that what began with a fire in fields near 136 and 38, spread rapidly towards a populated area and affected a large number of light poles, which were stacked in a warehouse of a company in San Charles.
That is why large plumes of smoke could be seen as firefighters dealt with the blaze, which took several hours of work to put out. According to reports, several poles were completely consumed in the same area where large grass fires were recorded yesterday. It was precisely in 137 and 526 that an important field burned, and a similar situation occurred in 156 and 46, where the fire affected a large field that belonged to an old juvenile institute.
They also reported large grassland fires in 173 and 38, where more than 6 hectares were burned. And in 175 and 528 the fire took another 6 hectares more, having to work almost three hours the firefighters of Melchor Romero. Finally, other igneous outbreaks required the intervention of the endowments in 178 and 504, and in 143 and 633 of Arana.
