The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) predicts that more than 50 percent of the European population will be infected by Omicron in the next 6-8 weeks, as has been advised by the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, Hans Kluge.
According to Kluge, more than 7 million new cases of Covid-19 in the first week of 2022, which is more than double in a two-week period. As of January 10, 26 countries report that more than 1 percent of their population is infected with COVID-19 each week.
Furthermore, 50 out of 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia have already reported Omicron cases. “It is rapidly becoming the dominant virus in Western Europe and is now spreading in the Balkans,” the WHO Europe regional director has warned.
