On Monday, the meeting between representatives from U.S Y Russia ended without strong progress, although with Moscow’s promise not to invade Ukraine. Despite low expectations, the parties stated that these were frank talks and a door was left open for a future dialogue.

The meeting took place in Geneva, while thousands of Russian troops are still concentrated on the border with Ukraine. Despite this, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, assured that the Kremlin has no intention of an invasion, reported NA.

“We explained to our colleagues that we have no plans or intentions to ‘attack’ Ukraine … There is no reason to fear an escalation in this regard,” he said at a press conference. The meeting between Russia and NATO is looming and the secretary general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has also minimized the expectations of the encounters.

“I don’t think we can expect these meetings to solve all the problems,” he said. Russia has concentrated troops near the Ukrainian border and has demanded the NATO alliance, led by U.S, to rule out the possibility of Ukraine, a former Soviet state, joining the organization or expanding it eastward, Reuters reported.

Washington urged Moscow to backtrack on its build-up of some 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, prompting Ukrainian and Western concern over a possible new invasion, eight years after Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine.
