He was responding to a recent statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said that NATO has become “a purely geopolitical project aimed at taking over areas that have been orphaned by the collapse of the Warsaw Treaty and the Soviet Union”.

Maria Sakharova, spokeswoman for the Moscow Foreign Ministry, replied to the Polish politician on Telegram and wrote: “Russia is female. Sikorski has clearly been a victim of the concept of gender diversity.”

The Warsaw Treaty Organization was an agreement for collective defense signed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and seven socialist republics in Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland. Commonly known in the West as the Warsaw Pact, it was created in response to the incorporation of the Federal Republic into NATO, the US-led military bloc founded in 1949.

In 1989, when there were numerous overturns in the socialist camp, the pact began to dissolve and in 1991 the treaty was officially declared expired. Since then, all members of the Warsaw Treaty who were not part of the USSR have joined NATO.
