Daniel Ortega has been sworn in as President of Nicaragua for the fifth time. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Revolution Square in the capital Managua. In his speech, the head of state condemned the economic sanctions that the US had imposed on his country.

After his fourth re-election in a row, Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega was sworn in for a fifth term on January 10th. The swearing-in took place on Revolution Square in Managua. The solemn ceremony was attended by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, his Cuban colleague Miguel Díaz-Canel and official delegates from Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Russia and China.

In his swearing-in speech, Ortega thanked the foreign representatives for their presence when he took office. Regarding the sanctions imposed by the US, the President said to the delegates:

“It takes a lot of courage to be here and defend international law.”

Ortega called on his US counterpart Joe Biden to also respect human rights.

“The US must meet the demands of the law. It is time to compensate the people of Nicaragua. We are not begging for handouts. We just want justice. We also demand that the blockade against Cuba and Venezuela end.”

The Nicaraguan President also criticized the US approach against migrants from Central America. The Washington government’s promises to protect the people are just empty words. The persecution and the number of crimes against those seeking protection would only increase. The US would have to change the situation.

On the same day, the Central American country signed a trade cooperation agreement with China, granting Nicaragua the right to participate in the New Silk Road project.

Before the swearing in, the EU and the US announced further sanctions against Ortega supporters who are believed to be responsible for human rights violations. The presidential election in November caused a lot of criticism in the West because several presidential candidates were arrested before the vote.
