Few Manchester United players are playing well right now, but Marcus Rashford, in particular, is struggling.

And, after yet another disappointing display, despite their 1-0 FA Cup victory over Aston Villa, his performance, effort and body language stood out.

.

Rashford didn’t have his best FA Cup performance

The 24-year-old was finally hooked with four minutes to go, but spent the 86 minutes on the pitch making no impact for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

“Marcus Rashford I’m sorry waving your arms but if you keep giving the ball away like that it’s only a matter of time before you leave that football pitch,” said Micky Gray of talkSPORT in the comments booth.

“It’s happened too many times this season.

“His body language is absolutely shocking right now, not just to him but to a lot of these Manchester United players. ”

“Their performance in this second half was absolutely horrible. ”

Things got worse for Rashford when, after Mason Greenwood’s shot was parried by Villa keeper Emi Martinez, he turned his back and wasn’t ready to follow the rebound for what would have been a simple tap- in.

This sparked a rant from Gray, who was frustrated by Rashford’s apparent lack of effort.

“I can’t believe what I just saw,” Gray told talkSPORT listeners.

“We just saw another replay now. Marcus Rashford deflects his body away from Aston Villa’s goal before Martinez actually retrieves the ball.

Premier League statistics:

2017-18 – Appearances: 35 | Goals: 7 | Assists: 5

2018-19 – Appearances: 33 | Goals: 10 | Assists: 8

2019-20 – Appearances: 31 | Goals: 17 | Assists: 9

2020-21 – Appearances: 37 | Goals: 11 | Assists: 11

2021-22 (Current season) – Appearances: 11 | Goals: 2 | Assists: 1

“Okay, he was probably waiting for the pass from Mason Greenwood, who did a fantastic job, but I don’t get him from a player with his back to you before the keeper gets the ball back. ”

He went on to say, “ [Rangnick] must change it. I’m not the manager of Manchester United but I can see when someone is having a hard time.

“You can’t put it down to anything else that he doesn’t want to run. You can have a bad first touch, you can have a very bad game, you can keep giving the ball but you have to put effort and try.

“He’s not running around – it’s as bad as I’ve seen it. What he just did there is terrible. We don’t do that on a football field. To turn your back ? Please… ”

Commentator Sam Matterface was quick to speculate why the England international’s form took a nosedive, citing his injuries, his missed penalty in the Euro 2020 final or his campaign against the government as possible reasons why he is not playing.

Rashford has always been one of United’s best players in recent years, but since coming back from injury this season he’s been just a shadow of himself.

” What is that? Because there’s something he looks like he’s given up, ”Matterface said.

“I look at him and I feel sorry for him because he looks at me like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and he’s struggling mentally. ”

He added, “Maybe he’s struggling with the spotlight that has fallen on him because of all the issues off the pitch?

“The penalty missed at the European Championship, maybe he didn’t really envision that he would end up facing the government like he did during the pandemic.

“Maybe it ended up taking its toll, but his football career has stalled. “

On talkSPORT after the game, United fan John told Sports Bar that Rashford should leave if he doesn’t want to be there.

“If he doesn’t want to play or work for the team, take him out of the club because his attitude stinks,” adding that Villa deserved to win.

« [Anthony] Elanga did more in five minutes [when he replaced him] that Rashford did in the entire game.
