Solskjaer is gone but there has been no improvement at Old Trafford

Manchester United have “retreated” since Ralf Rangnick took over Old Trafford in December, former Arsenal midfielder Perry Groves said.

The Red Devils worked towards a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round but, in truth, they were outnumbered for much of the game by Steven Gerrard’s men.

Questions continue to be asked of Rangnick

Scott McTominay’s eight-minute goal ultimately separated the teams, but a few poor finishes from the visitors helped United their way through to the fourth round.

Questions are being asked about Rangnick and whether players really buy into his philosophy after seven games in charge, after another lackluster display.

There hasn’t been a single convincing performance under the German and the former Arsenal Groves star has questioned their progress since taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked in November.

“I actually think in the seven games under Ralf Rangnick there has been no improvement,” he told Sports Bar.

“They probably backed off.

“They’ve had more progress under Michael Carrick in the three games he’s had.

“He made big decisions, leaving aside [Bruno] Fernandes et [Cristiano] Ronaldo.

“I wonder if Man United are desperately looking because they are a talented team. “

Groves continued to suggest United did not need to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and claimed he would drop the Portuguese superstar if he was a new manager to join this summer.

When asked what would be the first thing he would do if he got the job, Groves replied: “I will make sure Cristiano Ronaldo is not here,

“I would bring him out because he’s going to be bigger than all the managers who come in.”

” To say [Mauricio] Pochettino is coming in, he’s going to be taller than him and you can’t have a player taller than the manager.

“Ronaldo will always score goals for you, but if you want to progress and have the modern game, pressing, energetic, it is not Ronaldo. “

Continuing on Ronaldo, Groves added: “You have to have a vision and a clear philosophy of where the club is going,” he added.

“I think there was a bit of arrogance on the part of the Man United hierarchy, we are United and we can buy the best players.

“They didn’t need Jadon Sancho. They didn’t need Ronaldo, it was a vanity signing.

“They have all the pieces of the puzzle, but none of them fit together. “

Marcus Rashford has been identified as one of the players who has declined considerably this season and Groves insisted the wide England player “has lost his spark”.

“You mention Marcus Rashford,” he said. “He symbolizes what Manchester United are right now because he’s 24 and he doesn’t look like he’s having fun.

“He looks like he’s lost his spark.

“Before, he had this desire and this hunger to work and shut down people. I don’t see that at the moment.

“The best player of Rangnick’s seven games was David de Gea. “
