Jerónimo de Sousa will undergo emergency surgery

The secretary general of the PCP, Jerónimo de Sousa, will undergo an urgent operation on Wednesday and will miss the legislative election campaign while he is recovering, being replaced by João Ferreira and João Oliveira.

According to a statement released by the party, the communist leader will undergo “an urgent surgical intervention for carotid stenosis (to the left internal carotid), which cannot be postponed until after the elections”.

According to CNN Portugal, this condition had already been detected in tests, but doctors considered it necessary to operate urgently.

Jerónimo de Sousa will be out of the electoral campaign for ten days, that is, until the end of next week. In this Wednesday’s debate, in front of the PSD, the secretary general of the PCP will be replaced by João Oliveira.

The secretary-general shortened this Tuesday’s agenda, but he will still be present at a party action of the PCP at 15:00, in Matosinhos.

The remaining initiatives planned for today, namely a meeting with intellectuals and elements of Culture, in Porto, at the end of the afternoon, and a public session in Vila Nova de Gaia, at 21:30, will be held with the participation of Diana Ferreira, head of the CDU list for the constituency of Porto, and Jaime Toga, member of the Political Commission of the Central Committee of the PCP.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, called Jerónimo de Sousa to wish him “fast and good recovery”.
