Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed his condolences over the death of European Parliament President David Sassoli, who died at the age of 66 in the oncology center of the Italian city of Aviano yesterday. Earlier it was reported that on December 26, Sassoli went to the hospital due to a serious complication caused by dysfunction of the immune system. Sassoli was born in Florence on May 30, 1956. He began his journalistic career at the editorial office of the Roman newspaper Il Tempo, then worked for the Catholic news agency Asca and the newspaper Il Giorno. In 1992 he joined the Italian state television Rai as a news reporter. Since 1996, he has become the host of several popular TV programs. In 2007, he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief of the news service of the first channel Rai – Tg1. Sassoli came into big politics in the summer of 2009, when he was elected to the European Parliament on the lists of the Democratic Party. He headed the delegation of the Democratic Party in the EP. He was re-elected to the European Parliament in 2014, and since then Sassoli has served as deputy chairman for five years. As a result of the May 2019 elections, he became a MEP for the third time, and on July 3 – the head of the EP.

TBILISI, 11 Jan – Sputnik. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed his condolences in connection with the death of the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli.

The politician and journalist died in the oncology center of the Italian city of Aviano the day before at the age of 66. Earlier it was reported that on December 26, Sassoli went to the hospital due to a serious complication caused by dysfunction of the immune system.

“I express my condolences over the death of a real, faithful European and a great friend of Georgia – President of the European Parliament David Sassoli. Sincerely condolences to the family and friends of David Sassoli,” Garibashvili writes on the social network Twitter.
