GOLDEN GLOBES – A first in history. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez won her first Golden Globe this Sunday, January 9, a highly symbolic prize because it is also the first to be awarded to a trans person. She won the statuette for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Pose.
Delighted with this award, the star expressed her joy in a message posted on her Instagram account. “This is the door that will open another for so many talented young individuals. They will see that it is more than possible, she assures. They go to see that a young black and Latina girl from Newark, New Jersey who had a dream has changed minds with love. Love wins. ”
A victory therefore essential for her but also for the entire LGBT + community. “To all my LGBTQAI babies, here we are! The door is now open to reach for the stars, ”she continues.
The actress is not at her first coup. In May 2021, she was nominated for the Emmy Awards for the same role. Again, she was the first transgender person to be nominated for a lead role in a drama series.
In Pose, created by Ryan Murphy, MJ Rodriguez embodies the role of Blanca Evangelista. The series chronicles the emergence of ball culture and the fear of HIV in New York in the 1980s. With no less than five trans actresses in leading roles, the series operates a veritable revolution in terms of visibility.
The actress also appeared in the series Tick-Tick…Boom!, with Andrew Garfield, who was awarded to him in the category “Best actor in a comedy or musical”.
MJ Rodriguez joins Laverne Cox who began to move the lines in 2014 with his role of Sophia Burset inOrange is the New Black, a role that had earned her an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series”.
