Defense asks Roberto Jefferson to be transferred to hospital for fever

Alexandre de Moraes determines that the director of the prison speaks about the possibility of exams being carried out there

the defense of Robert Jefferson asked the minister of Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes that the ex-deputy be temporarily transferred from the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in Bangu, where he is being held, to the Hospital Samaritano da Barra, in Barra da Tijuca, for having presented with respiratory symptoms and fever. However, Moraes determined that the prison director should speak within 24 hours about the possibility of the exams indicated by the doctors being carried out within the prison unit itself. There is still no diagnosis of what would have caused the problem – the suspicions are of the flu or a new case of Covid-19, which Jefferson already had in September 2021.

“The patient has, since 01/07/22, persistent fever and respiratory symptoms, still without an etiological diagnosis. Due to the current epidemiological moment, I suggest transferring the patient to a hospital unit to continue the diagnostic investigation and institute timely treatment”, claimed the doctor Abdon Hissa, who signed the defense request. The politician’s lawyers ask that the transfer be carried out “to carry out the necessary tests and offer complete and adequate medical treatment, since he was already being monitored by that hospital, under penalty of irreversible worsening of his health condition, which could result in at risk of death.”

The former deputy has been in prison since August 2021, when he was detained by Moraes as part of the investigation into digital militias. The investigation investigates whether groups organize themselves on the internet to attack Brazilian democracy and institutions, and whether these groups are financed with public money. Moraes has already denied Jefferson’s habeas corpus requests, the last one in December, claiming that it was “necessary and essential to guarantee public order and criminal instruction”, and ordered the removal of the politician from the presidency of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB) for 180 days. On August 30, 2021, Jefferson felt sick and was admitted to a UPA in the Bangu complex, being transferred, in September, to Hospital Samaritano. Later that same month, the defense again requested transfer to a private hospital for medical treatment, which was denied by the STF minister.
