The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died today at the age of 65, after more than two weeks in a hospital in Italy, due to a dysfunction of his immune system, said his spokesman, Roberto Cuillo.

“The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died at 1.15 am [00:15 em Lisboa] on January 11 at the hospital in Aviano, Italy, where he was hospitalized. The date and location of the funeral will be communicated in the coming hours,” Cuillo wrote on his Twitter account.

David Sassoli was hospitalized with “severe complications” due to an “immune system dysfunction”.

Sassoli contracted pneumonia in September 2021, which forced him to undergo hospital treatment in Strasbourg, France, and although he was discharged from the hospital a week later, he continued his recovery in Italy and was absent from Parliament’s plenary sessions for more than two months. returning at the end of the year.

Next week, in the first plenary session of the year, the European Parliament will precisely elect a president of the assembly, something that was already foreseen in the middle of the current legislature, and not related to the state of health of Sassoli.

Maltese Roberta Metsola, of the European People’s Party (PEE), is the favorite to succeed the Italian socialist leader, who took office in the summer of 2019.
