Boca receives Colón and River travels to Santa Fe to play with Unión in the start of the LPF

Boca Juniors will host Colón, last year’s champion, at the Bombonera, while River Plate will travel to Santa Fe to play against Unión, at the start of the Professional Soccer League Cup (LPF), scheduled for February.

In addition, the first date will include clashes between Banfield-San Lorenzo, Racing-Gimnasia La Plata and Estudiantes La Plata-Independiente.

On the other hand, on Sunday March 20, for the seventh date, the superclassic between River Plate-Boca Juniors is scheduled, at the Monumental de Núñez stadium, in the so-called Interzonal day.

The draw for the match fixture, which was not broadcast live on any platform, was held at the Puerto Madero offices, where the Professional League, still chaired by Marcelo Tinelli (there will be elections on March 31), has its headquarters.

In addition to the media entrepreneur, there were also all the club leaders and Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

The 28 participating teams were divided into two zones. There are the 26 casts that acted last season plus the promoted Tigre -champion of the First National- and Barracas Central -winner of the Reduced-, which will be divided into two zones of 14

Each team will play a total of 14 games (13 in the area and one interzonal with their classic rival)

Zone A will be made up of Talleres de Córdoba, San Lorenzo, Defensa y Justicia, Sarmiento de Junín, Banfield, Argentinos Juniors, Gimnasia La Plata, Racing Club, Unión de Santa Fe, Atlético Tucumán, River Plate, Newell’s Old Boys, Patronato de Paraná and Platense.

Group B, meanwhile, will be made up of Godoy Cruz de Mendoza, Huracán, Arsenal, Barracas Central, Lanús, Vélez Sarsfield, Estudiantes de La Plata, Independiente, Colón de Santa Fe, Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero, Boca Juniors, Rosario Central, Aldosivi de Mar del Plata and Tigre.

The complete program for the first date, which is scheduled to begin on the second weekend of February (it will depend on the health evolution due to the coronavirus pandemic), is as follows:

Zone A: Banfield-San Lorenzo; Racing Club-Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata; Newell’s-Defense and Justice; Patronato-Argentinos Juniors; Union-River Plate; Platense-Workshops of Córdoba and Sarmiento-Atlético Tucumán.

Zone B: Hurricane-Lanús; La Plata-Independent Students; Arsenal-Rosario Central; Velez-Aldosivi; Boca -Colón; Godoy Cruz-Tigre and Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero-Barracas Central.

On Sunday March 20, for the seventh date, meanwhile, the local soccer superclassic will be played between River Plate-Boca Juniors, at the Monumental de Núñez, in the so-called Interzonal day.

That date will also include the San Lorenzo-Huracán duels; Gymnastics La Plata-Estudiantes de La Plata; Defense and Justice-Arsenal; Argentinos Juniors-Vélez; Córdoba-Godoy Cruz de Mendoza workshops; Atlético Tucumán-C. Cordoba (SE); Lanús-Banfield; Independent-Racing; Rosario Central-Newell’s; Aldosivi-Patronato; Colon-Union; Tigre-Platense and Barracas Central-Sarmiento.

Unlike the seasons developed between 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic began and in its continuity in 2021, at which time Sarmiento de Junín and Platense rose, in this new edition there will be decreases at the end of the year.

Therefore, the averages, which never disappeared, will provide the first two descendants at the end of 2022 and the projection, if nothing changes, is to leave 20 or 22 teams in the Professional League within four seasons.

In relation to the title, which will give the first place for the Copa Libertadores 2022, it will be resolved between the first four of each group, who will collide in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final, in a single match and on a neutral court.

The defending champion will be Colón de Santa Fe, who again hired Luis María “El Pulga” Rodríguez, one of his figures in the first star of professionalism.

In turn, whoever wins the competition will have a ticket to the 2022 Champions Trophy against the winner of the Professional League in the second semester.
