The Argentine Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the presence of Iran’s Vice President of Economic Affairs, Mohsen Rezai, in the re-appointment of Daniel Ortega as president of Nicaragua. Rezai is one of the five wanted with arrest warrants with red alerts for the attack against the AMIA.

“The Argentine Republic expresses its strongest condemnation. His presence in Managua constitutes an affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack against the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA). The Argentine government once again demands that the government of Iran cooperate fully with the Justice, allowing people who have been accused of participating in the attack against the AMIA to be tried by competent courts, “says the official text.

Foreign Ministry sources also indicated that the Argentine ambassador to Nicaragua, Daniel Capitanich, sent a cable explaining that At no time did he see or was in the same area as Rezai, because the diplomats were located in a different place on the premises. What’s more, Capitanich maintained that he learned of the presence of the Iranian vice president by reading Argentine newspapers on Tuesday.

As has happened repeatedly, the defendants who are high-ranking officials of the Tehran government travel with official passports and as a result of invitations from the governments of different countries. This means that the respective police forces – which are Interpol’s branches – do not intervene to enforce the arrests, because they obviously depend on the governments. Rezai was in Singapore, Malaysia and perhaps South Korea, while another defendant, Ahmad Vahidi, now the interior minister, was in Bolivia. Last August, Argentina condemned the two Iranian government appointments.

According to former ambassador Diego Guelar, who wrote a column in Infobae, an embassy secretary informed Capitanich that Rezai was at the resumption of Managua, but the diplomat denied it in a cable: he maintained that he just learned that Rezai was present as a result of the notes in the Argentine press, this Tuesday . Sources of the relatives of the AMIA victims told Page 12 that an ambassador must be aware of who is participating in a ceremony that he is going to attend on behalf of the Argentine government.

The accusation against Rezai for the attack on the AMIA

At the time of the attack, Rezai was Commander of the Revolutionary Guard and the accusation in the Argentine courts is based on the existence of a meeting of the highest authorities of Iran in the holy city of Mahshad, in 1993.

Supposedly in that meeting the attack against the AMIA was decided, whose execution was in charge – always according to the indictment – of the military wing of the Lebanese Hezbollah party, linked to Iran.

The Iranian government always denied any connection with the attack on the Jewish mutual, arguing that they were all the inventions of the Iranian opposition, exiled in Europe. Successive Argentine governments have been demanding that the defendants appear before the courts and give their version, but Iran categorically refuses.
