Algeria 0-0 Sierra Leone
In the “sluggish start of favorites” family, I ask for Algeria.
Like Cameroon, Senegal or Morocco, the reigning African champions did not shine for their entry into the running. But unlike these three, the Algerians were unable to take the three points. Result: Riyad Mahrez and his teammates have to be content with a draw against Sierra Leone (0-0).
After a moment of emotion offered by the Sierraléonais Kei Kamara, in tears during the hymns, Youcef Atal immediately set the tone for the match by missing a dangerous throw-in towards his goalkeeper after a few seconds of play (1re). Despite an attack-oriented system, with the unique Belkebla as a defensive force in its midst, Algeria did not weigh in front in the first half. And the porter of Leone Stars Mohamed Kamara is no stranger to this failure. If he is nicknamed Fabiański in the country, the goalkeeper especially took for Manuel Neuer one evening in 2014, not hesitating to go out far from his goal to embarrass the Fennecs. By dint of losing balloons in the middle, Algeria even put the striker Alhaji Kamara, author of two heads fleeing the frame, at the reception of a tense center (5e) then on free kick (22e). And if we close our eyes to a few sausages sent closer to the corner posts than to the uprights of Raïs M’Bolhi, we can even say that Sierra Leone dominated the first act.
In the second half, the Belmadi players come back with more edge, but no less waste. Brahimi has the direct opportunity to deceive Kamara, but he misses his duel (51e) before giving way to Bendebka (63e). The incoming was on the verge of taking advantage of a breakthrough from Belaïli to open the scoring, but saw his shot blocked by the former England international Steven Caulker (65e), which honored its first selection with the Leone Stars. At the end of the match, Saïd Benrahma, alone at six meters, misses his recovery (85e), before Rami Bensebaini was defeated by Mohamed Kamara, decidedly huge this afternoon (89e). With this goalless draw, the 106e world nation creates feat, and Algeria can be green.
Only positive point, the Fennecs will have at least managed to equal the 35 games without defeat of Spain and Brazil.
