Old Trafford does not forget: Manchester United fans welcome Gerrard

There are rivalries that, even as the years go by, will always remain as hot as the first day. And, if there is an especially burning rivalry in English football, that is the one between Liverpool and Manchester United, taking their differences to something more than purely football. Both cities have been rivals since Victorian times, in which the competition for being the most important port in the British country caused enmity between the two cities. Therefore, a scouser (a term used to refer to the inhabitants of Liverpool) as Steven Gerrard, Red legend, does not fall too well in the mythical Old Trafford, home of Manchester United.

The former Liverpool captain, retired from professional football practice and taking his first steps in the world of the benches, had not stepped on the fiefdom of his rivals for a long time, but that ended today. In his position as Aston Villa coach, the reunion was ready: the Villains would visit the Theater of Dreams in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The reception, of course, was what could be expected considering the history between the ex-footballer and Old Trafford.

The story of a disagreement

Although there have been a thousand moments in which both have been shorn, Gerrard has left several iconic images in the Theater of Dreams, as when in 2009 he accompanied a defiant Fernando Torres in his celebration while he reminded the fans how many Champions Liverpool had. Although, perhaps, the most iconic occurred a few minutes later, when he kissed the camera celebrating his goal in the 1-4 win. Image that, by the way, he repeated in 2014 on the same stage.

For things like this, the “cozy” welcome at Old Trafford has an explanation. And, although in the video it is not appreciated, more than possibly, they will have dedicated more than one song to Gerrard. Among the most famous – and the one that will possibly hurt the legend the most Red– is he ‘Have you ever seen Gerrard win the league?‘(‘ Have you seen Gerrard win the league? ‘), Referring to the absence of Premier League championships in his record. Thus, with so much tug of war between the two and Gerrard’s promising future on the bench, it is a matter of time before more chapters of the rivalry between the Englishman and the Old Trafford fans are written.
