Betty White suffered a stroke nearly a week before her death, according to the death certificate. The cause of death has been listed as stroke, which is loss of blood flow to part of the brain, resulting in damage to brain tissue, reports TMZ. White died on New Years Eve at the age of 99.

The death certificate, obtained by TMZ, revealed that the Golden Girls star had suffered a stroke six days before her death. She was “alert and consistent after the stroke,” a source with direct information told the site. Another source called the stroke “mild” and told PEOPLE that she “passed away peacefully in her sleep”.

White’s agent and friend Jeff Witjas announced White’s death on December 31. She “passed away peacefully in her sleep at home” that morning, Witjas said. “Even though Betty was about to turn 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas continued. “I will miss her terribly, as will the animal world she loved so much. I don’t think Betty was ever afraid to die because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband, Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again. ”

Days after White’s death, Witjas released another statement, refuting false rumors on social media that White’s death was linked to her receiving a coronavirus vaccine booster. A meme claiming White said she received a booster shot days before her death went viral, but Witjas confirmed White never made such a comment.

“Betty passed away peacefully in her sleep at home. People say his death was linked to the booster injection three days earlier, but that is not true. She died of natural causes. Her death shouldn’t be politicized – it’s not the life she lived, ”Witjas told PEOPLE on January 3. “She never said that about the recall. Betty died of natural causes. She did not have the recall three days before her death. ”

White died just weeks before celebrating her 100th birthday. Her television career began at the very birth of media, and she has continued to perform well in the streaming age. She won five Emmys, two for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, one for The Golden Girls, one for The John Larroquette Show, and her last for her triumphant performance hosting Saturday Night Live in 2010. In 1983, she became the first woman to win a Daytime Emmy for hosting a game show. In 2015, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmys. While White’s funeral is private, fans can still honor his memory by checking out the documentary Betty White: A Celebration, which will be released on January 17.
