AMAZON – More fear than harm. Amazon updated its Alexa voice assistant after a ten-year-old girl asked her for a challenge idea. Alexa then suggested to the child to touch a coin in contact with a pin plugged into an electrical outlet.

“Plug a phone charger halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a coin on the exposed pins,” the smart speaker offered when the girl asked it for a “challenge,” reports the BBC.

It was his mother Kristin Livdahl who launched the alert on Twitter. She posted a screenshot of Alexa’s suggestion. Mother and daughter were playing challenges. “It was bad weather outside. She just wanted another one, ”described Kristin Licdahl.

Fortunately, the girl did not take the risk of being electrocuted, “too smart to do something like that,” her mother said.

Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, refers to Internet searches to answer questions from its users. And this idea of a challenge is only the echo of a very dangerous challenge that is wreaking havoc on TikTok: the “Penny challenge”.

The latter consists of filming yourself touching a coin in contact with an electrical outlet. It goes without saying that the practice is very dangerous and can cause a lot of material and physical damage.

“Customer trust is at the center of everything we do and Alexa is designed to deliver accurate, relevant and useful information to customers,” Amazon told the BBCin a press release. “As soon as we became aware of this error, we took swift action to correct it”.

Alexa has therefore been updated by Amazon to prevent such an error from recurring in the future.
