Less than two weeks after the alleged anti-Semitic attack on the singer Gil Ofarim in a Leipzig hotel, surveillance videos that are available to “Bild am Sonntag” raise new questions.

Ofarim had made serious allegations against an employee of the hotel and filed a complaint. An employee at the reception asked the singer to remove his chain with a Star of David, only then could he check in. However, the surveillance videos that have now emerged show that Ofarim apparently did not wear a chain with a visible Star of David.

Ofarim: “It’s not about whether the chain was visible”

When asked by the newspaper, the singer said: “It’s not about whether the chain was visible.” It is about the fact that he was insulted anti-Semitically. According to information from “Bild am Sonntag”, the Leipzig police now have “considerable doubts” about the originally described course of events. Ofarim said during an interrogation that he was no longer certain whether he was wearing a chain that evening.

The video, in which Ofarim described what happened in the hotel, has now been viewed 3.4 million times on Instagram and caused outrage around the world about the possible anti-Semitic incident.

“I hope that something happens,” Ofarim told the German press agency on Monday. The danger is that the debate will fizzle out after a short time. “What happened to me happens every day in Germany, but often to people who may not have a platform to draw attention to.” Those affected are often afraid to get in touch.
