The eighties come back and come back hard. It is not only music and fashion, but also the film classics of that time. So much so that Ivan Reitman left the couch to catch up on the ever-anticipated and never-made sequel to Twins, with everything and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in the mix. Both actors will return to work together behind the camera and we even have the first video of their meeting.
With the filming of Triplets In full swing, it was a matter of time before we saw Schwarzenegger and DeVito reunited after almost thirty years of seeing them together on the Channel 5 classic. Despite the fact that age is already showing on their faces, neither of them he has lost his good humor and this was demonstrated by a small clip in which Schwarzenegger tries to play a joke on his partner. DeVito, however, is too skilled to fall for any ruse so he quickly figured out the trick.
In the video we can see how our beloved Terminator gives his costar a cigar just when someone presses play on the REC button and DeVito’s right-handed nose quickly identifies that the gift includes a surprise ingredient in the mix. The whole thing goes back to a joke from the past and a local joke that exists between the two, as Schwarzenegger later explained in his own newsletter:
“This month I also got together with my friend Danny DeVito to promote our movie Triplets! Ivan Reitman, our director whom you know from Twins, A Kindergarten Detective, and Ghostbusters, wanted to meet up with our new third brother, Tracy Morgan, at Zoom. Naturally, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring back a joke Danny played on me years ago on the set of Twins. You may remember the story of Danny putting marijuana in my cigar. Well this time we switch places. I waited until the end of the day’s shoot and we gave Danny a gift. But unfortunately, he still has the nose of a bloodhound and sniffed the special ingredient right away. Here’s the video of me handing him the cigar. I’m still waiting for Danny to send me the video of him testing it later. “
More than 30 years have passed since the premiere of Twins and yet it is a project that constantly dreamed of a sequel. Now upon their return, the twist is that they will no longer be just a pair of brothers, but a triplet. As Schwarzenegger well said, now the new addition is Tracy Morgan who will play the role of the other lost brother who for some reason that we will know when we see the film, remained a mystery until now.
Director Ivan Reitman explained to Deadline (via) that Eddie Murphy was involved in creating Triplets. Murphy and Schwarzenegger are good friends and the idea for a sequel came from both of them. It was Murphy who suggested that this time a third brother would be the detail that would lift the sequel. The script was configured with the actor himself, however, in the end he could not participate in it with his histrionic gifts.
“I’ve been good friends with Tracy Morgan for a long time and I always thought he was one of the funniest men in the world,” Reitman said. “I thought he would make a fantastic trio with them, so we rewrote the whole script for him. Now, we will go out and try to raise the money and get it.
Of course the money was raised and the sequel is now a reality. Triplets It doesn’t have a release date yet, but its arrival on screens is likely to occur sometime in late 2022. As Reitman Sr. takes it upon himself to bring the twins back, his son will meanwhile bring the twins back. Ghostbusters team in a new installment with the original cast. It’s the eighties, all over again!
