The Kenyan police have arrested the husband of world record runner Agnes Tirop, who was found dead this week.
The suspect was caught on Thursday in the city of Mombasa, said chief investigator George Kinoti of the AFP news agency. The long-distance runner and world record holder over 10 kilometers on the road was found dead in her house the day before with stab wounds on her stomach.
According to Kinoti, Tirop’s husband Emmanuel Rotich was caught while trying to escape. He is therefore in custody and should be brought before a judge on Friday.
A month ago, Tirop had set a world record of 10 kilometers on the road in pure women’s races in a race in Herzogenaurach and last came second over the same distance on October 3rd in a road race in Geneva.
The 25-year-old took bronze medals in the 10,000 m World Cup twice and took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo for Kenya, where she finished fourth in the 5,000 meters in August. As a 19-year-old Tirop won the cross-country championship title in 2015.
