Washington.- The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, stressed this Thursday that the European Union (EU) is a “preferred ally” of Washington and indicated that “It is the first place” that he looks to face “global challenges”, during the visit of the High European Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.
Blinken received Borrell at the headquarters of the Department, in the first official trip of the head of European diplomacy to Washington since the arrival of President Joe Biden to the White House in January.
“When you look at virtually all of the global challenges we face in the world, the EU is a preferred ally (…) The first place we look at is Europe, ”Blinken said in brief statements before the bilateral meeting.
Borrell, for his part, stressed that “The transatlantic relationship is the most important that the EU has with the rest of the world.”
“So we must turn the page of any misunderstandings and continue working together, “he said.
In a statement after the meeting, the Department indicated that the topics discussed included the events in Afghanistan, as well as the upcoming high-level dialogues between both parties with Russia and China.
They also highlighted their “strong support to the efforts to restore democratic order in Venezuela ”.
Washington and Brussels are experiencing one of the most tense moments in bilateral relations since the arrivalBiden’s adage to the White House, after the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August, which many Europeans consider the US mishandled.
Ties also suffered, especially after the anger provoked in France and the EU by the defense alliance between the US, the United Kingdom and Australia, which led to the canCelation of a multi-million dollar order for French submarines by Canberra.
In late September, however, the United States and the European Union inaugurated the first round of the bilateral Trade and Technology Council (TTC), andn a sign of approaching positions and with the idea of consolidating a common front against China.
