It is often said that, for a politician, there is no more beautiful occupation than being mayor of the city where you were born. For purposes of power, it is clear that running a City Council may not sound as attractive as a position of minister or president of the government, but it can mean more money at the end of the month. Specifically, there are in Spain until six mayors who earn more than Pedro Sánchez.
This is indicated by the latest remuneration data published by the Ministry of Finance and Public Function, that ah collected the salaries of all the councilors during the last course of 2020. With the new salary increase, in addition, they will be able to raise their salaries until they reach a maximum of 111,684.46 euros per year, according to the population of the city. In contrast, the salary of the Prime Minister will be 86.542,08 euros under the same rise.
Of the more than 8,000 mayors in Spain, a total of 2,620 of them claim not to receive any remuneration for their work. Of those who do claim to have a payroll, 1,515 claim to dedicate themselves exclusively to the city council, as in the big cities: all of them will receive a salary increase.
The draft general state budget for the year 2022, approved this week, contemplates that the salary increase of 2% agreed for officials is also applied in the annual remuneration of mayors. In this way, the councilors of cities with more than half a million inhabitants will be able to collect next year a maximum of 111,684.46 euros per year, a figure that no one has yet reached.
