Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an interview with CNBC confirms that he has not yet decided whether he will run for president again in 2024. The Kremlin press service quoted him on October 14th. Putin said:
“There is still a lot of time until the next elections. Talking about it would destabilize the situation. The situation should be calm and stable so that all authorities and all state structures can work confidently and face the future calmly.”
At the same time, the Russian President stressed that the constitution allows him to run for a further term, but that no decisions have been taken in this regard.
On December 17, 2020, Putin announced at a major press conference that he had not yet decided whether he would run for president in 2024. At the same time, he stressed that he had formal permission from Russian citizens to take this step.
That same month, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, named potential candidates for the Russian presidency, including Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the head of the foreign intelligence service Sergei Naryshkin, the chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and the head of the Chamber of Accounts Alexei Kudrin .
Dmitri Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian President, said that the question of a possible successor to Putin always arouses great interest, but that such speculations are usually unfounded.
