Phenomenon is caused by dry weather and lack of rain; storm caused power outages and disturbances in Ribeirão Preto
A new dust storm hit Ribeirao Preto, not inside of São Paulo, and other cities in the region this Thursday, 14. Serrana, Pintangueiras, Sertãozinho, Jardinópolis and São Joaquim da Barra also registered the phenomenon. In Ribeirão Preto, the dust was followed by heavy rain that caused power outages, trees and disturbance in some neighborhoods of the city. In September, the storm hit Franca, also in the interior of São Paulo, as well as Presidente Prudente, Araçatuba, Ribeirão Preto, Barretos, Jales and some cities in Minas Gerais. The phenomenon is caused by so-called “gust wind fronts”. According to meteorologist Franco Nadal Villela, from National Institute of Meteorology (InMet), explained to Young pan, this is due to dry weather and lack of rain. According to him, the wind comes down cold and enters under the hot air, generating turbulence, a thermal contrast that raises all the dust that was on the ground.
