It’s really official now. The MEP Paulo Rangel will be a candidate for the presidency of the PSD in the next direct, which held on December 4th.
The announcement was made this Thursday at the National Council, in Lisbon.
We can no longer be the party of waiting, of waiting to fall from maturity. We have to be the party of hope”, he said, according to reports from national advisers present at the meeting behind closed doors.
After having won the first “clash” of the night, with an expressive majority rejecting the proposal of the National Political Commission to postpone the decision on the internal elections of the PSD (71 votes against and only 40 in favour), Paulo Rangel intervened confirming that he will be a candidate to succeed Rui Rio.
According to reports made to TVI, Rangel affirmed that the PSD cannot just wait for power to fall and says he wants to move from this strategy of waiting to the “ambition of hope”, concluding that he will soon present his candidacy for elections “with all loyalty and freedom” of December 4th.
During the intervention, Paulo Rangel had already underlined that he is loyal, but he is also free, and he promised a responsible but firm opposition project.
