Disney Plus will distribute and produce anime content

Within the framework of the event APAC Content Showcase, The Walt Disney Company announced its formal foray into the distribution and co-production of anime content in 2022, as part of the expansion of Disney Plus in the Asia-Pacific region. These productions will be broadcast exclusively on its platform in Japan; However, the company has not yet specified which countries or territories will also be able to enjoy these titles internationally.

Disney Plus has acquired the licenses of streaming of the following series: Tatami Time Machine Blues, spiritual sequel to The Tatami Galaxy which adapts the homonymous novel by Tomihiko Morimi, directed by Shingo Natsume (Sonny Boy) and animated by Science SARU (Night Is Short, Walk On Girl); Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall, reboot from the franchise created by illustrator Huke; and Summer Time Rendering, adaptation of Yasuki Tanaka’s eponymous manga by acclaimed director Ayumu Watanabe (Spirits of the sea; Space Brothers).

Likewise, the mouse company and Aniplex revealed that they will co-produce an adaptation of the mobile game. Disney: Twisted-Wonderland. Released in March 2020 in Japan, this title is set in an academy where characters inspired by the most iconic villains from Disney movies coexist. Yana Toboso, creator of Black Butler, was in charge of planning the game’s concept, setting, and character designs.

Disney announced more than 20 productions during APAC Content Showcase, between series live-action, variety shows, documentaries and animations from Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, China, Taiwan and Australia. The company anticipated that it plans to green-light more than 50 original productions from the Asia-Pacific region in 2023.
