The National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty from Ecuador (SNAI), announced this Thursday that it is investigating a “presumed suicide” of four inmates, in the same jail where in the month of September the worst riot prison in the Andean country.

«SNAI reports the alleged suicide of 4 PPL (persons deprived of liberty), in pavilion 8 of CPL Guayas No. 1. (Penitentiary), “he wrote on his Twitter account, without giving further details. The entity added that it collaborates with the police and the country’s prosecutor’s office so that “this fact is investigated.”

The bodies were found in the Litoral Penitentiary, located in the city of Guayaquil, which has become the most violent prison in the country after at least 119 inmates were killed in a gang clash to seize power in late September. The government has said that the violence is due to territorial and leadership disputes between drug criminal organizations that operate inside prisons.

The President Guillermo Lasso Last month he declared a state of exception to the country’s prison system, which houses some 39,000 inmates, in order to free up resources and increase controls inside the prisons. The police reported that security protocols were activated in the Penitentiary since early Thursday morning and that during joint operations with the Armed Forces they found “2 suitcases with ammunition and 1 grinder,” Reuters reported.

The authorities said at the beginning of the month that they had managed to control the violence in the Penitentiary and the prisons were under the control of the uniformed, but they announced that the search operations continue to remove weapons, ammunition and even drugs from the pavilions.
