Chocolate car revenue increases after AMLO's regularization announcement

At the press conference, the president Lopez Obrador anticipated that the weekend will sign a decree to regularize the so-called chocolate cars that are currently circulating in Mexico, that the owners will pay for the process “a fair price” and that the resources obtained will be used for patching programs in the states.

Thousands of vehicles enter the country from the United States.

“There is a crashed car, there it is proven that the crashed cars pass them, whatever the model. All the time there has been corruption. Here in San Luis, Río Colorado, Sonora, they have been characterized as the most corrupt of all customs “said Cayetano Sandoval, a journalist in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.

Through this border gate they enter every day and at any time, from San Luis, Arizona, United States, to San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, dozens of vehicles, with superimposed plates, that are towed, for illegal sale in Mexico.

“Those vehicles are fixed, if they have a collision, they are fixed with the bodybuilders of San Luis and there they are for sale”said Cayetano Sandoval, a journalist from San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.

In less than a minute Luxury vans and vehicles, with small bumps, without tires, enter the tourist lane, without verification of documents or theft report, even though many are covered with tarps. The Foreign Trade Law indicates that used vehicles have to enter Mexico, rolling on their own, that they cannot be dragged.

“At the border, arms trafficking, drug trafficking, money trafficking and smuggling of all kinds, including automobile smuggling, is coordinated, underhanded, protected by organized crime gangs”, said Guillermo Rosales, deputy director of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA)

The entry of illegal vehicles intensified after President López Obrador announced last June a campaign to regularize the so-called chocolate cars.

“They are charging an average of 450 dollars per vehicle, it is going from 35 to 40 cars daily, daily ramps. There are more cars that walk by, without license plates that you cannot regularly remove license plates, because it is a crashed car that comes from an auction “commented an anonymous customs broker.

In the San Luis Rio Colorado customs it was captured when a 2018 Mustang with a Baja California license plate entered. Meters ahead they withdraw it; said plate is, in fact, from a platform trailer registered in Mexicali.

Hundreds of these vehicles are exhibited on the streets and premises of San Luis Rio Colorado; others are towed 78 kilometers to Mexicali, without municipal, state and federal police reviewing them.

The Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors denounces that there is a network of shell companies that manage, operate and market this type of vehicle entering them with overlapping plates, through the customs of San Luis Río Colorado, Mexicali, Ciudad Juárez and Nuevo Laredo.

“They go to auctions, register, are specialized in serving vehicle dealers who know that those vehicles they are selling end up in Mexico, entering into contraband status”, said Guillermo Rosales, deputy general director of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors, AMDA.

An interview was requested from the San Luis Río Colorado customs administrator, but they referred the press department of the National Customs Agency in Mexico, which did not respond to the request.
