Banksy's record sale: 21 million euros for his work "Love is in the Bin"

Banksy’s work “Love is in the Bin” (“Love is in the bin”) was sold this Thursday in London for 18.58 million pounds (21.25 million euros / 25.4 million dollars), a record for the enigmatic artist. The painting became one of Banksy’s most mediatic three years ago, when it self-destroyed under the astonished gaze of the auction room a few minutes after being sold for 1.2 million euros (almost 1.4 million dollars) .

Although the collector who bought the piece on that occasion took a week to confirm her decision, the fame that the work acquired has served to skyrocket its value. In the first bids of today’s session, the work, executed with spray and acrylic paint, had already exceeded the maximum price that Sotheby’s experts had estimated, 7 million euros (just over 8 million dollars).

Banksy initially baptized the work as “Girl with a Balloon”, a literal description of the image it presents. After being self-destructive, however, she decided to rename it.

The canvas on which the mysterious graffiti artist painted was partially destroyed after passing through a paper shredder hidden in the frame, a remote control mechanism that is still installed in the same place.

So far, the artist’s most expensive work was “Game Changer”, sold last March for 16.7 million pounds (19.4 million euros / 22.8 million dollars).
