The volcano continues to spread its destructive mantle through the Aridane Valley

“From 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., the people affected by this evacuation order must vacate their homes, with their belongings and pets, and go to the meeting point located in the Campo de Lucha Camino León de los Llanos of Aridane ”. This is how the evacuation part decreed last night starts from the Special Plan for Volcanic Emergencies of the Canary Islands (Singer) for residents of more neighborhoods in the municipality of The Plains of Aridane (The Palm) threatened by the unstoppable advance of the last lava flow generated by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, a monster that no one doubts that it is starring in the greatest natural catastrophe that has occurred in the Canary Islands during at least the last hundred years and, surely, the worst volcanic eruption suffered by these Islands since the lava took hold of Timanfaya for three years, back in the 18th century.

Nobody climbs, nor can they know, why this volcano, which on September 19 cracked the earth’s crust in a place on the Cumbre Vieja called Camino de Cabeza de Vaca, has broken the dynamics previously foreseen for palm tree eruptions, each time shorter and further south until the arrival of this catastrophe, which has not only erased the surface of 8% of the most beautiful of the Canary Islands from the map but has also made the future of so many palm trees and palm trees volatilize with its incessant fountain of lava.

It seems clear that, unfortunately, this demon has found the path that connects a gigantic bag of magma with the surface, which is causing the spilling of such incandescent material to not stop in its destructive task, also affecting -precisely- the Valley of Aridane, for so long the economic and demographic heart of La Palma.

For this reason, the very President of the Government of Spain is already on his fourth visit to the Island, and those that remain, aware as Pedro Sánchez is that nothing will be the same. As much as they try to reassure the public, both scientists and politicians are being responsible enough not to hide the seriousness of the situation generated by an eruption that, hopefully, will cease before the end of the year.

But last night -like today- what matters are the residents of the area to the south of the Camino de la Cruz Chica at the junction with Camino de Los Campitos, following Camino Morro Cabrito until reaching the LP-2 highway, just those who had than to leave their homes without knowing if they will be able to return to them.

There, where there was a mountain, now there is a monster of which, we must insist, it hurts to bury the past, but that is not the worst. The worst thing is that it destroys the future.
