“Abortion is not a party or a celebration, as seen in the environments of PSOE and United We Can”, said the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in an interview in The Ana Rosa Program this Wednesday. The regional leader has come to affirm that abortion should be a decision that is not taken four times as, the president has said, “many” women do.
About 2,400 women in Spain experienced their fourth abortion last year, according to the data collected in the latest report from the Ministry of Health. That figure, despite Ayuso’s words, barely accounts for 3% of the 90,000 women who interrupted their pregnancy in 2020.
The ministry’s data also shows that the vast majority of the interruptions were for the first time. About 65% of women who aborted in 2020 did so for the first time, and half of those women were under 24 years of age.
The ministry’s data show that it is women between the ages of 20 and 39 who have aborted more than once. In fact, 25% of the cases registered at these ages were a second interruption and for 8% it meant the third abortion. For this reason, feminist organizations and specialized clinics regret that Ayuso uses these data – those reflected by the Ministry – for political interests and they also demand that he allocate more public resources to sexual education, the prevention of unwanted pregnancies and access to contraceptives.
The president of the Community of Madrid has assured this morning in Telecinco who has always defended abortion: “It has to be legal, safe, but rare.” However, the organizations demand that the president effectively dedicate public resources to sexual education as well as to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies.
