The institutional degradation caused by the inclusion of United We Can in the Government reached new heights yesterday with the signing by Irene Montero of the condemned in final judgment Isa Serra. Serra was sentenced by the Supreme Court to 19 months in prison and disqualification for attacking police officers during an eviction.
To the signing of Isa Serra, the Minister of Equality has added that of Carlos Sanchez Mato and Celia Mayer, which are being investigated by the Justice for the alleged crimes of embezzlement and prevarication in the Open de Tenis case. Sánchez Mato and Mayer allegedly hired two law firms and divided the payments to avoid the controls of the Madrid City Council.
The signing as advisers of three characters as ill-advised as Serra, Sánchez Mato and Mayer, who should have already left the political scene of their own free will, provoked the mockery of citizens on social networks yesterday. One of them described the Ministry of Equality as the ‘bad’ Ministry for Montero’s efforts to convert it in the receptacle of all the toxic assets of United We Can.
According to Montero, Isa Serra, national co-spokesperson for Podemos, will be in charge of “strengthen international feminist alliances” to “place Spain at the spearhead of women’s rights and the LGTBI collective”. Celia Mayer will be the new Chief of Staff of the Secretary of State for Equality. Sánchez Mato will be an economic advisor to the Ministry of Equality. As is evident, the criteria for hiring them has not been their management skills or professional curriculum, but rather their membership in Podemos.
But it was Irene Montero herself who said years ago: “To place friends in positions of responsibility simply because of that, because they are friends, It may be legal, but it is still corruption“.
One wonders what Irene Montero will now think of her own words after placing in the Ministry of Equality not a friend, but a convicted by the Supreme Court for kicking an agent of the National Police and saying things like “son of a bitch, bitch, cocaine addict, bad mother, you fuck all the cops, your son would have to take your gun and shoot you“.
The three of Irene Montero will collect a total of 165,000 euros from the General State Budgets. The minister would do well to allocate that money to compensate for the damage caused by the crimes of Isa Serra (and for the possible crimes of Sánchez Mato and Mayer). The hiring by the Government of criminals convicted and accused of serious corruption crimes degrades the institutions and brings us a little closer to those regimes so admired by Podemos and so little by democracy.
