The Banfield Board of Directors reported on Tuesday that it fired the coaching staff of the women’s futsal team, which last Saturday scored four goals against on purpose to avoid a rival in the tournament’s playoffs.
Through a statement, the Drill leadership confirmed that after a meeting with the coaching staff headed by Mariano Vila “the immediate decision was made to remove them from their duties and to remove them from the Club with immediate effect.”
Last Saturday at the Nueva Estrella club, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Lugano, Banfield faced Gimnasia La Plata on the 10th date of the Primera B tournament organized by AFA.
In the first 8 minutes of play, the Drill’s women’s team went 2-0 up on the scoreboard but before the end of the first half, they scored three goals against. In the second half, the Banfield players scored another goal against and the match ended 4-2 in favor of Gimnasia.
“We are happy to add the 3 points but not because of how we achieved them. Banfield scored THE 4 GOALS AGAINST! We do not celebrate these unsportsmanlike behaviors,” was the message posted by Lobo’s account after the game.
On Sunday afternoon, Gimnasia published the video of Banfield’s four goals against and confirmed that he was going to present a report to the AFA.
“What happened in this match does not correspond to the values and sports and behavior practices promoted by the Banfield Athletic Club,” added the club from the southern zone of Buenos Aires.
“We apologize to the rival team, the authorities and the more than 200 players who practice Futsal in our institution and we promise to take the necessary measures so that this does not happen again,” the Banfilean directive completed.
