Only 40% of candidates for the 2nd phase of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education (CNASE) were placed at a university or polytechnic institute, according to data this Wednesday released by the ministry.
After a 1st phase of the competition in which 77% of the candidates were placed, the numbers of those who were now left out soared.
Of the 22,953 candidates for the 2nd phase, 9,154 students (39.88%) were placed, according to data released this Wednesday by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) on the day the results of this new phase are known. of the national competition.
Of the nearly 23 thousand candidates, more than 9,000 had already competed for the 1st phase but had not been placed (9,534), followed by the cases of those who now competed for the first time (4,491).
There were also 1,972 competitors who had been placed in the 1st phase but decided not to enroll and another 6,956 who were placed in the 1st phase and enrolled but tried again in this 2nd phase.
Although most students did not get a place, there were 4,441 vacancies that were not filled, mostly in courses at polytechnic institutes, such as Bragança, Guarda or Castelo Branco, which may make these vacancies available again in the 3rd phase of the CNAES.
Each higher education institution decides, for each of its courses, on the opening of the third phase of the competition.
When a higher education institution decides to open the 3rd phase of the competition, it sets the number of vacancies that may be equal to or less than the vacancies left over from the second phase, plus the vacancies that ended up not being occupied by the students placed now but that did not register and register.
Unlike what happened in the 1st phase, in this 2nd phase of CNAES there were more candidates placed in polytechnic education institutions (4,822) than in universities (4,272). In the 1st phase, around 30,000 were placed in the university subsystem, against less than 20,000 in the polytechnic.
The numbers also show that 72% of the candidates were placed in their first three options, here too there was a slight reduction in relation to the 1st phase.
The vacancies put up for competition in the 3rd phase will be announced on 21 October on the website of the Directorate-General for Higher Education (http://www.dges.gov.pt).
The application for the 3rd phase will take place between 21 and 25 October through the online system, which is also available on the DGES website.
Before that, students now placed have between the 14th and 18th of October to register and enroll with the higher education institution where they were placed.
In the set of the 1st and 2nd phases of this year’s CNAES, 51,431 new students have already entered public higher education.
The Directorate-General for Higher Education estimates that the academic year will enroll more than 100,000 new students, taking into account the different forms of entry into public and private higher education. Last year, around 95 thousand new students were expected.
