Paris – Wednesday, October 13, 2021, 6:44 p.m.

The French soccer league is also opposed to considerations for world championships every two years.

The league board of directors made a corresponding decision on Wednesday. The reason given was that the world association (FIFA) wanted to make a decision without prior consultation that was solely in its interest and irreparably negative for national leagues and clubs as employers of the players.

Importance of national championships

The development of football depends not only on the World Cup, which has so far been held every four years, but also on national championships.

FIFA should therefore promote the development of professional leagues where there is not yet one, said the French league.

Association president not negative

A FIFA advisory group had suggested that the finals should take place every two years after the 2026 World Cup. There is great resistance to this, especially in Europe and South America.

The French association president Noel le Graet is not fundamentally opposed to the considerations and wants to first examine the arguments in detail.
