An individual has been arrested for firing several shots at the University of the Basque Country. “I don’t want to hurt you, I’m going against the university,” the attacker was saying to the students he passed on campus during the incident. No one was injured in the episode, only material damage has been confirmed.
Panic has seized the University of the Basque Country (UPV) in Lejona, province of Vizcaya, metropolitan area of Bilbao, when a person armed with a shotgun and carrying out several arrangements broke out on Saturday afternoon. The Ertzaintza has evicted the campus of the faculty and quickly deployed an operation to try to clarify what happened, an operation that culminated in the arrest of the author of the shots.
According to the first information, an individual would have fired several shots from inside the Faculty of Science and Technology of the university campus, impacting those shots on the windows of the building. Several helicopters of the Basque police forces fly over the scene of the events looking for the shooter, who was arrested after 7:30 p.m.
According to some witnesses to the incident, the attacker would be a student from the center who entered the building and fired several shots at the window. The Basque Security Department has reported that the detainee is a 21-year-old.
After the arrest, the Ertzaintza has confirmed that the dangerous situation has already disappeared at the University.
Agents from the Mobile Brigade, Explosives Unit, Surveillance and Rescue Unit, Protection patrols, and the Intervention Unit participated in the police device deployed.
