Indian Wells, Calif. – Monday, 10/11/2021 8:38 am
Alexander Zverev starts with a 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 1 against the 20-year-old American Jenson Brooksby (ATP No. 79) in the ATP Masters in Indian Wells.
The number three German, who recently made headlines with his new love affair, needs a little start-up time to get going at the hard court tournament. With the win, the 24-year-old from Hamburg qualifies as fourth player after Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas for the ATP finals in Turin (November 14th to 21st).
In round 3, Zverev now has to deal with Andy Murray. The Scottish Olympic champion and former Wimbledon champion plays with a wild card in the $ 9 million event in California. The 34-year-old Briton (ATP No. 121) surprised after his smooth opening success against Adrian Mannarino with a 5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 2 win against the young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev’s record against Murray is 0: 2, most recently the Scot won in Cincinnati in three hotly contested sets in 2020.
In addition to Alcaraz – No. 30 of the event – the number 7 of the hard court tournament also says goodbye: Felix Auger-Aliassime is defeated by the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 4: 6, 2: 6.
John Isner (USA-20) defeats Yoshihito Nishioka 6: 3, 6: 4. Kevin Anderson (RSA) takes Lorenzo Sonego (ITA-17) out of the competition in round two with 7: 6 (7) and 7: 6 (3).
