Some fans believe Arsenal goalkeeper sold for £ 3.5million is now the best in the world

Everyone is talking about the mistake Arsenal made in selling Emiliano Martinez in the summer of 2020.

The Gunners have allowed the Argentine keeper to join Aston Villa on a £ 20million deal.

It was a lot of money for Arsenal, but a breathtaking first season for Martinez at Villa Park, combined with an erratic season for Bernd Leno last season, indicated that Mikel Arteta and Edu made a mistake.

And they did. There is no escaping it.

But one element of the goalkeepers ‘bad deal that is receiving less attention is the North Londoners’ decision to ship David Ospina to Napoli.

Arsenal only raised £ 3.5million selling the Colombian plug to the Italian team two years ago.

But the 33-year-old remains a superb goalkeeper and his performance in the 0-0 draw against Brazil last night proves it.

Ospina managed a series of superb saves to deprive the Seleçao of qualifying for the World Cup.

And here’s how some Colombian and neutral fans reacted to his exploits:

This one, however, is not on Edu – and certainly not on Arteta.

Ospina was sold six months before Arteta even replaced Unai Emery in the UAE and although the latter was the head coach at the time of this transfer, he was not pulling the strings in that department.

This honor – or disgrace, given his record – belonged to Raul Sanllehi, who at the time was Arsenal’s leading transfer figure.

Edu had joined the club that summer from Brazil, but it was the former Barcelona boss who had the final say on these matters.

And so, the blame, if any, lies with him.

If selling Martinez for £ 20million was a mistake, selling Ospina for £ 3.5million was definitely
