The diplomat Michael Linhart will be defended as the new Austrian Foreign Minister on Monday. The previous incumbent Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) succeeds Sebastian Kurz as Federal Chancellor.
Austria’s ambassador to France, Michael Linhart, will be the EU country’s new foreign minister. Linhart was born in Turkey in 1958, where his father was a diplomat. Michael Linhart worked, among other things, as the Austrian ambassador in Damascus and Athens, most recently in Paris. He also served as Secretary General in the Austrian Foreign Ministry for four and a half years. Among other things, he gained political experience as an advisor to the then Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel (ÖVP). Linhart is married and has three children.
The personnel rogue was triggered by corruption investigations against Sebastian Kurz, who announced his resignation as Federal Chancellor on Saturday. Kurz’s close colleagues are suspected of having bought accommodating reporting from a media company in order to pave the way for Kurz to the party leadership and the Federal Chancellery from 2016. Kurz is also listed as a suspect. However, he remains the ÖVP party leader and changes to parliament as leader of the parliamentary group.
