EQUALITY – The Catholic Church in France finds itself hurt and humiliated. She couldn’t see and hear what was going on. The report on sexual abuse caused amazement and shame. That tens and tens of thousands of minors have been sexually abused by priests leaves us speechless! The work of the Commission of Investigation on Sexual Abuse in the Church – CIASE – has been remarkable, not only by its very detailed content, but also by the quality of the personalities who composed it.
Victims have spoken, a word that has value and weight. A word that has been heard. Other victims will continue to be heard. Thanks to them, nothing will be the same again.
Put an end to the male domination that historically and culturally structures the Church
After the pardon of the Church as an institution, compensation for victims and the question of the imprescribability of the facts are put before us and remain a real democratic question. However, it will remain the most difficult to achieve: equal rights between men and women. We are going to come up against male domination which historically and culturally structures the Church.
It is a question of women having a right of access to all the authorities of the Church and participating fully in decisions.
That women can access ordained ministries.
That the obligation of ecclesiastical celibacy be abolished to open up the possibility of ordaining men or women, married or not.
After the CIASE
The Catholic Church in France has had the courage to create an independent commission to find out the truth.
Will she have the same courage to implement, with all the baptized, the follow-up of this commission? Will she trust Jesus’ word? “The truth will set you free ”Jn 8,32: This word is for everyone.
We can share it. It finds its place in our secular Republic.
