Direct | The Government faces food waste: more than 30 kilos per inhabitant and year in Spain

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has called for this Monday the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers that is traditionally held on Tuesdays, since tomorrow the National Holiday is celebrated throughout Spain. Sánchez has chaired the meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Palacio de la Moncloa since 9:30 a.m., in which a bill was issued to confront food waste.

Agriculture Minister Luis Planas has highlighted that 3 out of 4 households in Spain waste food, which represents more than 30 kilos per inhabitant per year: 1.3 million tons. The Government wants to tackle this problem and call for a social debate on the need for healthy, safe and sustainable food.

Expiration date and best before date

Products with an expiration date about to pass but in good condition for human consumption can be donated to people in need.

Distributors must provide bars, restaurants, hotels … with bags or boxes where to deposit these products for donation.

Supermarkets of more than 400 square meters must have an area with products that, although in perfect consumption conditions, do not have the best image: fruits, vegetables …

“There is no food product more expensive than that which ends up in the garbage,” said the Minister of Agriculture.
