Amnesty International draws attention to the situation of guest workers in Qatar with a large banner in De Kuip during the World Cup qualifying match of the Dutch national team against Gibraltar.
“FIFA and Qatar, don’t let workers stand in their shirts,” the banner reads. The Dutch football association KNVB has given Amnesty permission to hang the canvas behind one of the goals in the Rotterdam stadium.
“Amnesty has been working on the World Cup in Qatar and the situation of the migrant workers for a long time,” said a spokesman. “In the spring, at the start of the World Cup qualification, a lot of attention was also paid to this. The KNVB was also very active in this at the time. They are on the right track, but we believe there is room for improvement. Now the KNVB is mainly working behind the scenes on this subject, while there is really still a lot to improve in Qatar. We therefore want to make another public statement in this way.”
