Thomas Christiansen recalls that "the way is long" and asks "modesty"

The national coach Thomas Christiansen praised the attitude shown last night by his players during the match that ended in a well-deserved victory (1-0) against United Statess.

“All the victories are important, and more after the setback we had against El Salvador, to return to the way we returned to a great rival such as the United States,” stressed the Spanish-Danish coach.

It is the first time that the Panama team has beaten the Americans in World Cup qualifying rounds. Three points that temporarily place him in direct qualification positions for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“We have been fortunate to win and win at Rommel, after the first two games (at Rommel) against Costa Rica, which we deserved to win, and against Mexico, against whom we played a great game; this time we were able to better control the situation in the last 20 minutes… we got the victory, which was the most important thing ”, highlighted the coach.

Against Canada on Wednesday, Christiansen promised that the national team will come out to compete, although he regretted taking such a long trip to meet the Canadians in such a short time.

The performances of the midfielders Freddy Góndola and Christian Martínez, starters for the first time in the Christiansen era, received high marks from the head of the bench of the eleventh isthmus.

“Freddy Gondola gave freshness to the attack in the band (…), I liked the desire he put in, the one who sought one against one … I want people like that on my team, brave people, who dare,” he said.

“Christian Martínez played a great game (…), he and Aníbal (Godoy), there in the midfield, gave us a lot of consistency”, evaluated the strategist.

Christiansen recalled that the road in these qualifying rounds is very long, and we must face what comes with humility.

He indicated that what has become clear, last night, is that the football practiced by the national team is “that of today, the one we show against Jamaica, against Costa Rica and Mexico.”

“When we don’t have the ball, we lose our identity and today we have returned to being Panama, a team with possession and the desire to play,” he said.

The defensive work of Panama was of great importance last night, since the visitors failed to make any direct shot at the goal of “Manotas” Mejía. The eleventh from Isthmus made 401 passes, of which he completed 320.

Aníbal Godoy, with a header, scored in the 53rd minute the goal that would give the Creole team three points. “I feel good, I have no words to describe what this group has done today. We said it, the team that comes to this house has to suffer,” Godoy said.

“I am happy with the three points, the goal can be scored by anyone,” he added.
