According to the media, two people were killed in the collision of two cars near Sochi. The Russian TV presenter and ex-presidential candidate Xenia Sobchak was a passenger in a car. She is said to have not sustained any serious injuries.
A serious accident occurred on Saturday evening on the route between Adler and Krasnaya Polyana near Sochi. A Mercedes, in which the Russian TV presenter and 2018 presidential candidate Xenia Sobchak was, collided with a Volkswagen.
A 35-year-old passenger in the Volkswagen is said to have died on the spot. According to the media, another passenger of the car later died in the hospital. A third person is said to be seriously injured and is currently being treated in hospital. The driver and passengers of the Mercedes are said not to have suffered any serious injuries. They left the scene of the accident on their own.
The Mercedes driver pleaded guilty to causing the fatal accident. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against him. The driver has been provisionally released under a travel ban.
It was only on Sunday afternoon, when the news about the accident was already making the rounds in the Russian media, that Sobchak commented on the events. The 39-year-old announced on her Telegram channel that she had suffered a concussion and other injuries. Since she wanted to go to her son’s home, she left the scene of the accident in another car. She was shocked when she heard that there had been deaths. Sobchak promised to help the victims’ families.
Some Russian-language Telegram channels accuse the TV presenter of trying to cover up her involvement in the accident. A video is circulating in the media allegedly showing how Sobchak enters an airport building less than an hour after the accident.
Sobchak is the daughter of Putin’s political foster father Anatoly Sobchak, the former mayor of Saint Petersburg. She had become known through her participation in controversial TV shows. In 2018, she ran as an opposition presidential candidate in the election campaign, in which she received 1.5 percent of the vote. Many other Russian opposition politicians, such as Alexei Navalny, accuse Sobchak of an alleged agreement with the Kremlin to divert society’s attention from the fact that Navalny was excluded from the election for conviction.
