EL MUNDO celebrates the National Holiday tomorrow with a special edition that includes a luxury gift for readers of the Gran Madrid supplement: a gigantic fold-out illustration by cartoonist Ricardo Martnez. The illustrator has portrayed the city of Madrid with an authentic work of art measuring 147 centimeters long by 58 high, worthy of framing at home.
The plate is a tribute to the city of Madrid and two of its most emblematic places merge in it: the Retreat and the Prado Museum. For this reason, the picture reflects the lake of the famous park full of boats, only that the boats are not occupied on this occasion by locals or tourists, but by the Meninas de Velzquez.
Infanta Margarita presides over the drawing, but instead of being located in the old Alczar of Madrid, it appears paddling in front of the Monument to Alfonso XII.
As in Velzquez’s painting, she is accompanied by Isabel de Velasco, the Infanta’s maid of honor; Mara Agustina Sarmiento, the other girl who offered water in a bcaro and Mari Brbola, the dwarf who was located to the right of the work. There is also the famous mastiff that sails in another boat accompanied by Nicolasito Pertusato, a dwarf of noble origin and court jester, and the painter Velzquez, who also rowed at a short distance supervising everything.
It is one of the most technically difficult works that Ricardo Martnez has done throughout his career due to the large size of the work: The Art Director, Rodrigo Snchez, commissioned me to draw an illustration related to Madrid. I thought of different concepts and it occurred to me to do something with the Retreat, now that Unesco has just declared it a World Heritage Site. It is the drawing that I have taken the longest to make, but doing it I have learned more than in the previous 30 years, explains the author.
To carry out his works, Ricardo uses the technique of scratchboard, which consists of scraping on the surface as if it were a scalpel.
The illustration is accompanied by a text by Fernando Benzo, writer and former Secretary of State for Culture, who recalls that Madrid is a city of infinite faces and that it does not have an obligatory icon with which to identify as it happens. with Big Ben in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
But that, in the case of Madrid, is not a defect but a virtue … Madrid does not admit a single perspective … Madrid is a day in the Retreat discovering your future in tarot and one night in Malasaa still going to the Penta to listen to songs that make him love you, he affirms in his plea.
With this special, EL MUNDO celebrates the arrival of Gran Madrid, a daily supplement that collects all the political news of the city, neighborhood complaints, the best leisure plans and the characters that give life to the capital, through the section from Between cats and cats. Don’t miss your kiosk appointment tomorrow to have an indelible memory of Madrid, from Greater Madrid.
